With the Euro 2020 qualifiers now over and Netherlands sealing their place at the tournament, thoughts will now turn to the summer and who will make it into Ronald Koeman’s squad.
Speaking to NOS, Koeman said he will use the friendlies next March to decide the final few spots in his squad that are up for grabs, “In March, I will use the games for discussion points in the selection. Then I will also let many players play. We play very consciously on Thursdays and Sundays and we will not play twice with the same team. In May, just before the European Championships, I will be working on a fixed team.”
Koeman would not reveal the opponents in March, “Who are we playing against? I know who the opponents will be, but the contracts have not yet been signed, so I cannot say anything about that now. “
With several young players knocking on the door, Koeman admitted it is a battle to be given a spot in his squad, “We have five or six months left until the European Championship. We have many young players who are also half a year further in their development. It’s going to be a real battle to play in the European Championship selection, I just told the players. We are going to calmly see who we are going to take with us.”
On debutante’s Calvin Stengs and Myron Boadu, Koeman added, “Calvin started a little awkwardly, but you can see from his ball treatment, way of turning away and speed that he will become a great player. Whether that is enough to go to the European Championship, we will see for sure. Boadu and Stengs really play with bravado, they are also perfectly accommodated in the group. They are two very modest boys who fit in incredibly well with this group. ”
