elia werder souThe 27-year-old Dutchman was linked with the Premier League club in the English media last week, and when asked during a press conference, Southampton boss Ronald Koeman confirmed they were in advanced talks to sign the winger on loan, with an option to buy.”

Koeman said, “He is one of the players on our list to bring in in January. It’s still not done but yes, I am interested in the player.”

“If he signs for Southampton.I think it’s a good option because what I said before we need at least one player in front because we will lose Sadio Mane in January as he will play the Africa Cup. We need a player on that position.

“He was a Dutch international, had not such a good period in Germany, but I believe in the qualities of the player.”

“He’s a wing player and normally we play always with a left wing player, right wing player, and we like in our style fast people who can play one against one and with qualities.”

Elia starred for ADO Den Haag and FC Twente before moving to Hamburg in 2009. After two years at the German club he joined Juventus, but his spell in Turin was short and he moved back to Germany with Werder Bremen a season later.

Werder Bremen are keen to offload the high earner from their wage bill as he no longer features in their first team plans.
