The midfielder joined the Spanish giants in the summer from Ajax but has been played out of position and has been given some mixed reviews by the media.
However, Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman is confident that De Jong will succeed at the Nou Camp.
He told Sport, “This was a year of transition for him, as 1989 was for me when I signed with Barça.
“He is a very intelligent boy and a very gifted footballer. He will certainly succeed. It does him no good that he does not play in his natural position, as he did at Ajax.”
