Ronald Koeman was happy with his Netherlands side after they booked their place at Euro 2020 on Saturday with a 0-0 draw at Northern Ireland.

Netherlands struggled to create chances in Belfast but held on for a 0-0 draw with Northern Ireland missing a penalty in the first-half. The draw was enough to seal Oranje’s place at Euro 2020 next year.

After the game, Koeman told NOS, “I am happy and proud of the team. I also think you can now forget how tonight’s game went. It went as expected, they started storming from the start and we immediately had that moment with Jasper Cillessen and then we actually give them extra energy. In the end they only had two moments. I think we should have done more offensively, but we have reached the point that was needed for placement and that is the most important thing.”

Koeman admitted he settled for a draw towards the end of the game, “In the last minutes I really opted for the 0-0, so I also brought on an extra defender with Aké. As a team, we always want more and better, but we have achieved a great result by qualifying for the European Championship. And that in a group with a great opponent like Germany and a tough opponent like Northern Ireland. I also just want to say that it is fantastic that we have placed ourselves. ”

Germany are now top of the group but Koeman isn’t giving up on turning that around on Tuesday, “I haven’t given up yet, why would I do that?” Germany still has to play against Northern Ireland and if you’ve seen Northern Ireland play against us twice, I can see them grabbing a point against Germany. But for us now only the game against Estonia counts, that will be another nice game on Tuesday.”
