Depay is one of Netherlands biggest young talents and after impressing at the World Cup last summer, the winger was linked with a number of clubs before eventually deciding to sign a new deal with PSV.
Speaking to the Metro, Erwin Koeman revealed Southampton made a move for the 20-year-old, but were left disappointed when he decided to stay in Netherlands.
Koeman said, “We informed our interest to his agent.”
“With his style he would fit well in England. Memphis is fast, focused and physically strong. Southampton would have been an excellent springboard for him to the very top of the Premier League. Here he would have had time to get used to the level and would have had two Dutch coaches who have great confidence in him, but he chose to stay at PSV.
“A big shame for us, but also for him. ”
Depay has netted 13 goals in 16 matches so far this season, and is hoping to fire PSV to the Eredivisie title before making a move abroad next summer.
