Koeman was the favourite to take over from Louis van Gaal after last summer’s World Cup, but the KNVB decided to name Guus Hiddink as coach, and only offered the former Feyenoord boss a role as assistant manager. Koeman turned that down and eventually became Southampton manager.
Speaking to College Tour Koeman reiterated his desire to coach the Oranje, “I still have the ambition to become head coach yes.”
“I see that as an honorary job. Maybe something nice to round off a coaching career.”
Talking about being overlooked last year, Koeman admitted he was surprised that Hiddink was offered the job, “That the KNVB finally chose Hiddink did amaze me. I think it would have been better for a young coach.”
