koeman soaiThe former Feyenoord coach took over a Southampton side in the summer that were tipped to struggle this season after losing a number of key players to other clubs. However after 21 games Koeman has taken the Saints to third place in the table after overseeing the club’s first ever Premier League win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Speaking after gaining the win over rival Louis van Gaal, Koeman stated for the first time this season that Southampton are aiming to qualify for Europe.

Koeman told the media, “I believe we can fight for the positions to play European football next season.

“I don’t talk exactly about Champions League but I am talking about a European position.

“We have played 20 games and in ten have had clean sheets. If we do not have really bad injuries to key players, then why not? We have a good defence and we have a good team organisation when we do not have the ball.

“I really believe that we can do it. I also think the players believe but they have to show it. Games like Manchester United are good tests.”

Southampton last took part in a European competition back in the 20013/04 season when they were knocked out in the first round of the UEFA Cup by Steaua Bucharest.
