For weeks, Manchester United and Barcelona have been locked in talks over the Dutchman, and it seemed that an agreement was getting close.
Speaking to Cadena Cope, Laporta has stated he will do all he can to keep De Jong, but also stated that the Dutch international may have to cut his salary to remain.
Laporta said, “He is one of the best players in the world in his position according to all experts. There are several clubs that want him, not just Manchester United, but we have no intention of selling him.
“He wants to stay and that’s important. I’m going to do everything I can to make that happen, but we also have to take his salary into account. Something has to change. But that’s a discussion we’ll have to discuss later. Frenkie is world class.”
De Jong has always maintained that he wants to stay in Barcelona, but the club’s financial position was said to be the reason they were open to doing a deal with Manchester United at the right price. It remains to be seen whether Laporta is right and he will keep De Jong at the club.
