Netherlands had defeated Slovenia and Wales over the last week and with only one team advancing from each group they knew a draw was enough to book their place in this summer’s Euros.
However, Maarten Stekelenburg’s side which featured the likes of Mohammed Ihattaren and Orkun Kokcu, failed to take control of the game and seemed to be happy with a draw.
Spain pushed for a winner which didn’t seem like it was coming until the 90th minute when Barcelona’s Alejandro Marqués broke Dutch hearts.
Netherlands will now not take their place at the Euros this summer.
