Liverpool failed in a summer move for the former Groningen and Celtic star but they have finally got their man, according to an exclusive from The Telegraph.

On Tuesday it was being reported that Manchester City were ahead in the race to sign the Dutchman with a £60 million offer ready, but Liverpool and Southampton have been in discreet talks over the past few days and have come to an agreement on a £75 million fee. That would be the record fee paid for a Dutch footballer and a defender.

Van Dijk has favoured a move to Liverpool in order to work with Jurgen Klopp and the Merseyside club have a contract ready for the Dutch international, believed to be worth £180,000-a-week.

The deal could be completed before the transfer window opens on Monday.
