Liverpool have confirmed the signing of young PEC Zwolle centre-back Sepp van den Berg.

The 17-year-old was in the middle of a transfer battle which included PSV Eindhoven, Ajax and Bayern Munich, who were all desperate to sign the defender.

However, it is Liverpool who have captured Van den Berg on a muli-year contract. The deal agreed with PEC Zwolle is believed to be an initial €1.6 million but that rises over €3 million with bonuses.

Van den Berg told the Liverpool website, “It’s just an amazing feeling.

“It is, for me, the biggest club in the world and it’s a dream come true. I am really excited.

“I’ve seen what kind of players from the Academy grew into the first team here. It is unbelievable, especially when this kind of big club does that.”

Van den Berg made his PEC Zwolle debut at the age of 16 and went on to make 24 first-team appearances. The club wanted to keep hold of the centre-back for longer but his contract expired next summer, meaning they had to sell in order to receive a good fee.

The Netherlands U19 international joins fellow Dutchmen Georginio Wijnaldum, Ki-Jana Hoever and Virgil van Dijk at the Champions League winners.
