Liverpool have confirmed that Virgil van Dijk will require surgery after suffering an injury in the 2-2 draw at Everton on Saturday.

The Netherlands centre-back was forced off after only ten minutes of the Merseyside derby after a late challenge by Jordan Pickford.

After scans it has been revealed that Van Dijk has suffered knee ligament damage and will require surgery.

The centre-back will now miss months of action, meaning he is out of the Champions League tie with Ajax next week. It will now be a race for the defender to be fit in time for next summer’s European Championships.
