Jamie Carragher did not hold back in his assessment of Virgil van Dijk after Liverpool’s 5-2 loss against Real Madrid on Tuesday evening.

Liverpool, with Van Dijk and Cody Gakpo in the eleven, took an early 2-0 lead in their Champions League clash with Real Madrid but ended up on the end of a 5-2 defeat at Anfield.

Speaking to CBS Sports, Jamie Carragher said, “I’ve never seen a team come to Anfield, on any European night I can remember, and destroy Liverpool like that. That was lousy from Liverpool, shameful, we’ve been apologizing for them all season.¬†We’ve said why they’re not doing as well as in previous seasons, but that was a shame in the second half.”

Carragher then took aim at Van Dijk, “What makes me laugh is that Virgil van Dijk said a few months ago that I wouldn’t get in their back four – I think I would take his place at the moment.”
