Jamie Carragher did not hold back in his assessment of Virgil van Dijk after Liverpool’s 5-2 loss against Real Madrid on Tuesday evening.

Liverpool, with Van Dijk and Cody Gakpo in the eleven, took an early 2-0 lead in their Champions League clash with Real Madrid but ended up on the end of a 5-2 defeat at Anfield.

Speaking to CBS Sports, Jamie Carragher said, “I’ve never seen a team come to Anfield, on any European night I can remember, and destroy Liverpool like that. That was lousy from Liverpool, shameful, we’ve been apologizing for them all season. We’ve said why they’re not doing as well as in previous seasons, but that was a shame in the second half.”

Carragher then took aim at Van Dijk, “What makes me laugh is that Virgil van Dijk said a few months ago that I wouldn’t get in their back four – I think I would take his place at the moment.”
