The first real chance for PSV resulted in a goal on 17th minutes as Luuk de Jong cleverly flicked the ball into the path of Hirving Lozano and the Mexican calmly slotted into the net.
De Jong and Steven Bergwijn then missed chances to double PSV’s lead before the break, while Excelsior should have been reduced to ten men but Jurgen Mattheij’s lunge on De Jong went unpunished.
In the second half, PSV failed to kill off Excelsior with Theo Zwarthoed saving from De Jong and Bergwijn. Late on Excelsior threatened an equaliser, but a nervous PSV held on for the narrow win.
