Ajax’s U19’s were knocked out of the UEFA Youth League after a penalty shootout loss to Lyon. The last 16 tie finished 2-2 in regular time.

John Heitinga’s side started well in France and Brian Brobbey nodded Ajax ahead after only seven minutes.

However, Lyon then took control and Lenny Pintor scored the equaliser on 19 minutes. Ten minutes into the second half, Lyon took the lead when Hamza Rafia caught Issam El Maach off his line and chipped the ball into the net from halfway.

Lyon could have killed off the game but they missed several chances. Any chance of a comeback seemed to be over for Ajax in the 85th minute when Liam van Gelderen saw red but Brobbey equalised in injury time to send the game to penalties.

Ajax had the chance to win the shootout but Che Nunnely missed and eventually Lyon progressed after Dylan Hoogerwerf’s poor spot-kick.
