The Jong Oranje face Georgia on Thursday, and with regular captain Marco van Ginkel out with a cruciate ligament injury, Maher is set to take over the armband.
This was confirmed by coach Stuivenberg after the U-21’s finished their final training session on Dutch soil in Doorwerth on Monday.
Stuivenberg’s team have suffered a number of pull outs, with Jurgen Locadia, Yassine Ayoub, and Ruben Ligeon all injured. Ajax’s Davy Klaassen follows his goal at the weekend with a call-up, along with Heracles’s Thomas Bruns, and Groningen defender Timo Letschert.
The coach had some words of warning for his young side, “Against this team it is really a test to see where the players and staff are. Particularly offensively they have many quality players including, Giorgi Chanturia and Valeri Qazaishvili.”
