persie van manThe 31-year-old had a disappointing season for Manchester United, scoring only 10 goals and his future at the Premier League club is apparently up in the air. Coach Louis van Gaal is reportedly ready to ditch his former Netherlands captain, with Juventus heavily linked.

However Roy Makaay believes that Van Persie’s poor season was down to tiredness and has backed the striker to come good again next season after a good rest.

Makaay told goal, “It’s important for Robin that he takes a good holiday,”

“Last year after the World Cup he didn’t come back really fit and he was fighting that in the whole year. I’ve seen Manchester United play only once and that was the 90 minutes against Southampton and Robin was amazing in that game, scoring both goals in a 2-1 win.”

“For the rest of the season he was injured and then coming back. That’s why it’s important that when he starts the new season that he starts it fit. Everyone knows he has some amazing qualities and he can still be useful for Manchester United.

“If you don’t start the season fit with the high level in the Premier League it’s difficult to get to that level. Every time you get a small step back. As a striker you have to be 100 per cent every game.

“The defenders want to kill you every game and that’s why you have to be prepared. So if you are not fit you get hit every game. Strikers have to be fit 100 per cent and then you can make a difference. Robin still has quality and hopefully he can show that next season.”
