PSV Eindhoven striker Donyell Malen will miss the rest of the season and the European Championships.

The 20-year-old had successful surgery on his knee in Pittsburgh but his recovery will take longer than six months.

Malen will miss the rest of the Eredivisie campaign and is also ruled out of the Netherlands squad for this summer’s European Championships. That’s another blow for Ronald Koeman, who is already set to be without Memphis Depay.

Malen told the PSV website, “In the beginning I was afraid of the worst possible injury, but luckily that is not the case. The doctors see it as a minor intervention and I am – despite the fact that it is all annoying – happy with it. Of course it is disappointing that I can no longer play football this season, but it could have ended worse. I want to thank my family and everyone else who supported me. I’m going to do everything to come back better and stronger. ”

Malen is PSV’s top scorer this season with 17 goals in 25 appearances.
