PSV overcame the Premier League club 2-1 in the reverse fixture earlier this season and after a mature and defensively solid performance they once again frustrated Manchester United coach Louis van Gaal.
During the first half Jeroen Zoet was the hero for PSV, with the goalkeeper making two good saves to deny Anthony Martial, while he was also equal to poor efforts from Bastian Schweinsteiger and the in-effective Memphis Depay, who was back on the left wing.
The damage to the PSV defence was limited due to an excellent midfield display from duo Andres Guardado and Davy Propper, who took control as the game wore on. In the second half PSV could even sniff the opportunity for an un-expected win, with Luuk de Jong firing just wide, while Propper also tested David de Gea from range.
Late in the second half Jesse Lingard wasted the best opportunity of the game, with the English youngster firing over from close range, and the PSV defence comfortably held on for a crucial point.
All that now stands in the way of PSV and a place in the knockout rounds is Russian side CSKA Moscow. A win in Eindhoven in two weeks is enough for a place in the last 16 and a massive boost for Dutch football.
