Overmars stated that maybe Ajax put too much emphasis on youth and therefore leaving gaps in their squad which could be strengthened with a better transfer policy. He also believes that the club has missed opportunities in the summer transfer market.
He said, ”In terms of the current misunderstanding what you read in the media is that Ajax do not want to spend money and that is not correct. We want to spend money when the right player comes along. In terms of the price that is not really that important.
”I also believe that our expectations have risen due to our good season last year where we enhanced our reputation in Europe.
”Rumors persist of Ajax signing left back and you must not forget that Nick Viergever and Daley Sinkgraven can also play in that position.
”Maybe we put too much emphasis on youth where we leave gaps in our squad where we are then left skating on thin ice. We did not go in for Sam Larsson because we did not believe that he is good enough for Ajax.
”We are in such a strong position financially that we now have a lead on our competitors. In terms of players leaving, for example, Davy Klaassen we knew even last year that after 5 years at Ajax he would leave the club this summer. We did not expect to sell Davinson Sanchez and we did all we could to keep him but the offer we received was huge.
”I do not anticipate other Ajax players leaving. It is the start of the season and the team is not yet in form.
” We have had a tumultuous pre season and I believe that is due to last year. It was only 10 weeks ago that we played in the Europa League final and now we have to start again.
”If I am really honest we have missed opportunities during the summer transfer window.”
