van ginkel fVan Ginkel joined Chelsea from Vitesse in the summer, but he has been ruled out since suffering a knee injury in a Carling Cup tie against Swindon last September.

On Friday, Van Ginkel made his return for Chelsea’s reserves, playing 45 minutes of the 0-0 draw, and the midfielder nearly netted the winner near the end when he saw a goalbound shot brilliantly saved.

Afterwards the 21-year-old spoke to Chelsea TV on his return, ” “It felt really great to play. Again it was fantastic. It was a pretty close match, although we did have some more opportunities.”

With Kevin Strootman facing a long spell on the sidelines there could be a chance Marco van Ginkel could still make the Netherlands squad for this summers World Cup.

However, Van Ginkel is pessimistic,  “It is not realistic at this stage to think about that. My first goal is to be fully fit again and then we’ll see.”

“The World Cup would be a huge bonus for me.”
