VVV defeated RKC Waalwijk 2-1 on Friday night which sealed their place in the Eredivisie next season. Steijn stated that the club deserved to be promoted and he also reiterated his stance on potential interest from an as yet unknown English club, believed to be Ipswich Town.
Steijn said, ”I was soaked in champagne after the game during the celebrations and I expected that. It was an exciting game and I did not feel that my team was tense. Luckily we managed to win and managed the situations well and I believe that we deserve our promotion to the Eredivisie.
”If you manage to get promoted four games before the end of the season then that is deserved. We have had a good strong lead throughout the season and we managed to stay top of the league. We want to complete the season now by becoming champions.
”We have a few good players and a good collective group. We also have good characters and we know our limitations. We managed to get promoted with limited resources. There are a lot of clubs in the Jupiler than have more resources than us. We will look at enforcements and I believe that we will be able to perform well in the Eredivisie next season.”
”I was sacked by ADO Den Haag in the past but I had two great years there where we also played European football and then after that a new challenge when I started here at VVV Venlo 3 years ago which has been a success.”
On the rumors of serious interest from an unknown English club Maurice Steijn reacted by stating, ‘ All things that may happen go through my agent. I instructed him that any potential interest would be shelved on my part at the moment because I first want to achieve promotion with VVV Venlo and become champions. If there is after that serious interest from a club I would have to listen and look at the possibilities. I have a contract until 2018 here at VVV Venlo and we are discussing an eventual extension and I am really enjoying my time here. We shall see what the future will bring.”
