memphis m goalThe winger was a high profile signing for van Gaal last summer, and came with a strong bond with the coach which was described by some as a father-son relationship in the media. However, Memphis failed to adapt to the Premier League and van Gaal’s tactics which left him rooted to the bench at the end of the season and ditched from the squad for the FA Cup final win over Crystal Palace.

Speaking to De Telegraaf, Memphis was asked for his reaction to the news that van Gaal was sacked on Monday and whether he had a love-hate relationship with the coach. He said, “A love-hate relationship? I don’t know. Now that he’s leaving: that’s how it goes in football, in life. You learn from it and become stronger.”

Memphis also reacted coldly to the opinion that van Gaal gave him his chance in the Premier League, stating, “I would have got there anyway. I say that because I believe in myself and work hard.”

Jose Mourinho is reportedly set to become the new boss at Manchester United, but Memphis doesn’t think it will affect his future, “This won’t have consequences for me. I’m happy at United and the directors are happy with me too.”
