The 34-year-old’s contract with Sparta ended this summer and the club were willing to offer the veteran an extension. However, Mendes da Silva has decided to call it quits.

He told the official Sparta website, “My comeback with Sparta in the Eredivisie was great. The fans had not forgotten me and I had not forgotten them. ”

The seven-time Netherlands international broke through at Sparta before playing with Ajax, AZ Alkmaar, Red Bull Salzburg and Panathinaikos before returning to Rotterdam last year. Sparta are hoping to convince Mendes da Silva to remain at the club in some capacity.
