The Israeli giants lost 3-0 to neighbours Hapoel Haifa on Saturday and that proved to be the final straw for Meulensteen, who has handed in his resignation.

The former Manchester United coach said in a statement on the clubs website, “It was an honor and a privilege to be working at a big club like Maccabi Haifa. I have been given the opportunity by the President. Unfortunately, the results were not good. The club and the supporters deserve more. ”

Meulensteen leaves with Maccabi Haifa sitting 7th.
