Roda JC beat NAC Breda 2-1 after extra time in an excellent game to book their place back in the Eredivisie on away goals. The tie finished 2-2 after two legs.

roda nacAfter a 1-0 win in the first leg, NAC Breda were huge favourites to retain their spot in the Eredivisie, but Robert Maaskant’s side failed to build on their lead, and were punished just before the break when Mitchel Paulissen raced onto a through ball before passing Jelle ten Rouwelaar and slotting into the empty net.

In the second half referee Danny Makkelie caused the major talking points, firstly turning down penalty shouts from both sides, before sending off NAC midfielder Mats Suetjens for his second yellow on 70 minutes.

Roda JC nearly took advantage of their extra man two minutes later, but Anco Jansen’s strike came off the bar. Adnan Tighadouini struck the post for NAC after racing through on goal, before Paulissen was also denied by the woodwork at the other end. The match went in the extra time, but just before the full time whistle Roda JC were also reduced to ten men with Arjan Swinkels receiving his second yellow card.

NAC Breda seemed on their way to safety when defender Dirk Marcellis made it 1-1 just before the break in extra time, although replays seemed to show the ball did not cross the line. However Roda JC shocked the home crowd and booked their place back in the Eredivisie on 110 minutes as Tom van Hyfte volleyed into the bottom corner from Frank Demouge’s knockdown.

For the first time since 1999 NAC Breda will play in the Eerste Divisie next season, while Roda JC are back in the Eredivisie a year after they were relegated.
