Napoli defeated Juventus on penalties to lift the Coppa Italia trophy after a 0-0 draw.

Matthijs de Ligt went in search for his first major trophy since joining the Italian giants from Ajax in the summer. He lined up alongside Leonardo Bonucci in the defence against Dries Mertens, who had just signed a new deal with Napoli.

Juventus started brightly but it was Napoli who went closest with Lorenzo Insigne hitting the post. Diego Demme was then denied by Gianluigi Buffon just before the break.

In the second half, Napoli created the better chances but Buffon was imperious in the Juventus goal. Just before the end, the veteran goalkeeper made an excellent point blank save from Nikola Maksimovic and then kept out the rebound by Elif Elmas.

The match went to penalties but Paulo Dybala and Danilo missed theirs for Napoli, who eventually sealed the trophy when former Ajax striker Arek Milik netted their fourth consecutive spot-kick.

De Ligt will now have to wait to get his hands on a major trophy in Turin.
