NEC Nijmegen’s chances of escaping the relegation playoffs look bleak after they slumped to a 1-0 defeat at home to Excelsior.

The home side went into the game on the back of six straight defeats and sitting in 17th place. With ties against AZ and Heerenveen to come, the match at home to Excelsior seemed like the last chance for the club to escape the play-offs.

NEC controlled possession for most of the first half but their lack of sharpness in attack was evident as they barely threatened Warner Hahn in the Excelsior goal. At the other end, Stanley Albers went closest to the opening goal but shot just wide.

On 58 minutes, Excelsior broke the deadlock with Mike van Duinen heading Khalid Karami cross into the net. NEC couldn’t mount a comeback and they slumped to their seventh defeat in a row.

Excelsior one again look like they have escaped the clutches of relegation and now sit in 12th.
