NEC Nijmegen made a winning start to 2016 after a Christian Santos penalty saw them overcome Willem II 1-0.

santos nec kkNEC lost their defensive leader Rens van Eijden during the winter break, but his absence wasn’t felt during the first half with Willem II reduced to efforts from distance as Brad Jones stayed fairly untroubled.

At the other end Christian Santos passed up two good opportunities to break the deadlock, while Joey Sleeger’s mishit a shot in front of goal. OnĀ 20 minutes the home side did take the lead with Santos netting from the spot after Stijn Wuytens was punished for handball.

Willem II failed to make a comeback after the goal and NEC comfortably saw out the game, especially after Frank van der Struik was sent off for the visitors. NEC are now up to fifth, while Willem II sit 13th.
