The first half in Nijmegen was a timid affair with neither side taking control. Simon Tibbling went close for Groningen with a shot that tested Joris Delle while at the other end Mohamed Rayhi fired over for the hosts.
With 25 minutes left NEC thought they had taken the lead when Dario Dumic netted but the goal was ruled out by referee Ed Janssen for a foul. A minute later Groningen took the lead through Tom van Weert who finished well from Yoëll van Nieff’s cross.
Seventeen-year-old substitute Ferdi Kadioglu then rescued a point for his side with seven minutes from time. The midfielder netted his first goal for the club last week to earn a draw at Utrecht and he repeated that feat with a nice finish past Sergio Padt.
The draw means NEC are 12th while Groningen sit 14th.
