NEC Nijmegen are in deep trouble at the bottom of the Eredivisie after a last minute 2-1 defeat to 10-man Heracles Almelo.

necAfter suffering the heartache of losing in the KNVB Cup semi finals midweek, NEC returned to league action in desperate need of a win to avoid being caught adrift at the bottom.

After Bryan Linssen missed a glorious chance for Heracles, NEC took the lead on 20 minutes as Michael Higdon finished off a brilliant team move by moving past the keeper before slotting into the empty net.

Before the break Heracles came within inches of equalising as midfielder Thomas Bruns saw his effort come back off the crossbar. With ten minutes to go, Heracles did finally find the net as Jason Davidson drove into the top corner from close range after NEC failed to clear a lobbed cross to make it 1-1.

On 83 minutes Heracles were reduced to ten men as Mike te Wierik was shown his second yellow card for a late challenge on NEC midfielder Soren Rieks.

Then with the last kick off the game in the 94th minute Heracles hit NEC with a sucker-punch, and stole all three points, as Matthew Amoah headed in Iliass Bel Hassini’s cross to make it 2-1, and stun the home crowd into despair.

The loss leaves NEC with only four games left, and four points adrift of safety, and its looking almost certain that they will at least feature in the relegation play-offs. Heracles rise to 10th after the win.
