Utrecht were only in front for a minute, as straight up the other end, Michael Higdon headed a free kick past Robbin Ruiter to make it 1-1.

On the stroke of half time Utrecht restored their lead as Jens Toornstra’s low cross into the box evaded the onrushing Steve de Ridder and nestled into the bottom corner.

However NEC once again came back into the game, with Jakob Jantscher netting the equaliser on the hour mark, as he fired in Cristoph Hemlein’s cutback.

The home side then put constant pressure on the Utrecht back four, but the away side held on to claim a vital point. NEC remain second bottom, while Utrecht climb one place to 14th.
