It was the visitors who made the stronger start in Nijmegen, with Hakim Ziyech, and Jerson Cabral seeing efforts kept out by Brad Jones, while Zakaria El Azzouzi did find the net, but his goal was ruled out for handball. For NEC, Navarone Foor went close with a strike that was kept out by Nick Marsman, while Felipe Gutierrez was forced to clear from his own goalline.
After the hour mark El Azzouzi should have opened the scoring, but the on-loan Ajax forward failed to beat Jones when one-on-one with the NEC keeper. The home side eventually punished this miss with Anthony Limbombe racing onto Foor’s pass before finishing well past Marsman.
Two minutes before the end NEC sealed victory with Christian Santos powering into the box before finding the bottom corner with a low strike.
NEC now climb to fourth, while Twente remain 16th.
