Netherlands 2-1 victory over Kazakhstan put them back into contention for third place in group A, and a place in the play-offs for Euro 2016. However the Oranje were hoping that the Czech Republic would do them a favour and beat Turkey, meaning Netherlands fate going into the final game would be in their own hands.
Turkey had other ideas though and their 2-0 win over the Czech Republic in Prague means Netherlands are set to miss out on their first European Championships since 1984.
Netherlands now need to beat the Czech Republic on Tuesday and hope that Iceland, who have drawn their last two qualifiers with Kazakhstan and Latvia, can triumph in Turkey or there will be no Euros for the Oranje next summer.
When you see countries like Austria, Northern Ireland and Iceland all qualify and Holland not make it boils down to a complete debacle of the KNVB. Poor coaching, selection of players and an inability to play to your strengths and plug your holes namely their defense. This lack of detail exists at all levels and is starting to show glimpses in the Eredivise. There are very talented players but no real super stars right now and I think the coaching has become too arrogant to think they can and should play the same way regardless of the talent stage of the players. This is a good thing as it will force the KNVB to rethink that Holland will not always be a power house. You have to try to win even if it means you defend.
Agreed 100 percent Mike. The tactics and formations used by LVG at the World Cup were deliberate to compensate for the holes you mentioned, especially in defense.
I find it mind boggling that Hiddink / Blind failed to notice this and make adjustments despite some of the terrible performances in the first few matches. Too much stubbornness and, as you say, maybe arrogance.
