Following a 2-0 loss to France on March 5, Belgium has surpassed the Netherlands on FIFA’s world ranking system, seeing them fall to 11.The last time the Oranje found themselves outside the top ten was back in 2002, after failing to qualify for the World Cup.
Coupled with the loss of Kevin Strootman, one of only three players Van Gaal guaranteed a spot to Brazil, it’s a low point in a time where confidence should be at its highest.
Of course, Van Gaal has a long list of quality midfielder to choose from. However, as many have said before, its not a matter of replacing Strootman, its re-strategizing the tactics to fill the hole Strootman will leave.
The good news is that the tournament is still time to turn it all around. While the FIFA rankings may reflect bad news, games are won on the pitch. So we’ll have to wait until the elftaal do their talking on the field.
