Jeroen Zoet 5/10: Should have done better to keep out the goal but was otherwise untroubled. Made a good save to deny Trippier and came rushing off his line to clear from Sterling.
Hans Hateboer 6/10: An overall positive debut. Had some troubles with the pace of Rose but dealt with him well and also showed some attacking content.
Patrick van Aanholt 5.5/10: Like Hateboer, he got forward at every possible opportunity and provided some danger with crosses. Looked a little suspect at the back.
Matthijs de Ligt: 8/10 Koeman said afterwards that the 18-year-old was the best player on the pitch and it’s hard to argue against that. Strode through the game comfortably and looked untroubled. Was a bit lucky to not give away a penalty but a very good performance by the Ajax man.
Stefan de Vrij: 6/10 Was at times caught out for pace at the back but kept Englands attackers at bay for most of the game and made more clearances than anyone else on the pitch. Needs to do more with possession of the ball, though.
Virgil van Dijk 6/10: The captain looked comfortable throughout the game and marshalled the defence well.
Kevin Strootman 4/10: I struggle to watch the Roma midfielder in Oranje because he offers very little going forward or at the back. His poor clearance led to the England goal and he did nothing to take Netherlands forward throughout the game. Always seems to pass sideways.
Georginio Wijnaldum 4/10: Looked lost in a Netherlands shirt once again. Also a bit lightweight when in possession and turns over possession too easily. Where is the Wijnaldum who used to drive at his opponents?
Quincy Promes 4/10: Looked to have pace but didn’t take on an opponent once when in possession. Offered very little going forward before being taken off.
Memphis Depay 6/10: The most lively of Netherlands attackers in the second half. Actually tried to make things happen and went close with a free-kick. Lost possession a few times in the first half which was frustrating but still looks like Oranje’s best attacker.
Bas Dost 3.5/10: Was given a chance to prove himself with Janssen out and he didn’t take it. Lost possession several times in the first half and showed no intent to get it back. Offers very little off the ball. Service wasn’t there for him, but there was also a lack of effort.
Ryan Babel 4/10: Came off the bench in the second half but didn’t make an impact
Davy Propper 4.5/10: Looked livelier than both Wijnaldum and Strootman when he came onto the pitch but was also guilty of some poor passes.
Wout Weghorst N/A: Came on in the 89th minute for his debut. Didn’t have enough time on the pitch but did run and put himself about more in four minutes than Dost did.
Donny van de Beek N/A: Came on with a minute to go and couldn’t make an impact.
Thought the backs did well considering they got very little help from the midfield. Debutante Hateboer was probably the highlight for me. Him and de Ligt look a sound combination on the right. Kudos to Koeman for setting that up.
Van Dijk was commanding and for the most part covered up PVA’s shortcomings, but got to say it was good to see the LB getting forward allowing the forwards to come inside; and until someone better comes along PVA’s definitely a better option than the Ake/Veltman style
PVA – 6.5 and the rest of the back 5 – 7.5.
Btw, It was a 5-4-1 not a 3-4-3. Just because the wing backs get forward doesn’t mean they aren’t backs.
Apart from the backs everyone else was poor.
Including Depay. Ok he ran around in the last 3rd of the game trying to get things going (and in typical fashion threw up his hands a couple of times – another Balotelli with less talent imho) but in all honesty if Kluivert, Idrissi, Berghuis or Berwijn had played would they have done any worse. I don’t think Depay’s good for the team going forward. I’d much rather see a different personality given the free role to attack, let alone the talent and consistency. Ronnie needs to find out who he’s got rather than taking the time to talk up Depay.
I wouldn’t rate any of them above a 4 and if I was Ronnie I’d be starting with a different 5 against Portugal.
It suggest to try some minutes for pair Bas Dost and Wout Weghorst with 2 wingers during friendly match. The midfielders do not need to push too much forward to protect the defender. The skillful and speedy wingers attack the opponent wingback every time even it is double team by opponent.
If depay was the most lively player, well think of the others, corpses on the field! Depay is less than an average player who thinks to be the greatest!
I’ve always seen strootman as the leader now i think he should be benched and play van ginkel instead.
Bas dost, wilnaldum, depay, should all be dropped, if koeman is building the future i want to see more kluivert, vilhena, van de beek, weghorst
i know it is early to judge koeman in his first match i remember even van gaal’s first match aginst belgium ended 4-2 for them but at least we saw some potiential from the team, 3-4-3 was very good defensivly i feel that we were solid at the back with de ligt van dijk and de vrij i think they are among the best defenders in the world right now the two wing backs also was good van aanholt is good in attack hateboer also was good but i think tete will be better in attacking the problem is in wijnadum and strootman both of them became useless for the team he must try propper and van de beek in the next match ,promes also is awful when facing good teams he only perform good when facing teams like belarus and medium teams aginst top teams he is also useless,we cant also judge bas dost in this match although he hasnt prove himself with any of the coaches but i hope he can perform better under koeman for me luuk de jong is the best option as a striker he always score and make a good performance when he came into the play i know many could argue with me about that but thats my opinion
How about this when F. de Jong is fit again? 😛
Dost
Kluivert-Memphis-Promes-Berghuis
F. de Jong—v.d. Beek
Virgil—de Vrij—de Ligt
