Jasper Cillessen 6/10: Had a quiet evening throughout until he made one great save in extra time. Will have busier nights in Netherlands goal.
Quincy Promes 7/10: Koeman gave the winger a chance at right-back and the experiment worked. He looked lively and provided an assist. Very effective option against smaller nations.
Patrick Van Aanholt 6.5/10: Finally given a chance to shine from the start in place of Daley Blind. Looked lively at times but didn’t contribute enough to oust Blind.
Matthijs de ligt 6/10: Just like Cillessen, De Ligt had a simple evening and was barely involved. A relief for the Juventus defender at the moment.
Nathan Ake 7.5/10: With van Dijk out, Ake was given a chance to start. In defence he was barely threatened and he got himself on the scoresheet with a header. Is definitely a threat from corners and set pieces.
Frenkie de Jong 7.5/10: Again one of the best players on the pitch, Frenkie did everything with ease against Estonia. Such a silky player to watch and will be a joy at the Euros next summer.
Davy Propper 6.5/10: A steady but not remarkable performance from the midfielder, who was looking to prove he is a better option than Marten de Roon.
Georginio Wijnaldum 9.5/10: Given the captains armband on the night and the midfielder did not let his side down. A hattrick capped a great performance from the Liverpool star. Also made a big statement against racism.
Calvin Stengs 7/10: Looked nervous in the first-half and misplaced a few passes but in the second he provided two assists and looked a threat throughout. A very positive debut from the winger.
Memphis Depay 6/10: Got another assist for Ake’s header but came off at half-time with the forward clearly not 100% fit.
Luuk de Jong 5/10: Got the chance to start but simply did not take it at all. Missed a great chance with a header and was eventually replaced after an hour.
Substitutes
Myron Boadu 7.5/10: An absolute live-wire after coming off the bench and he deservedly capped his debut with a goal. The 18-year-old looks a big talent.
Wout Weghorst 5.5/10: Came off the bench for Luuk de Jong on the hour mark. Didn’t take his chance.
Kevin Strootman 6/10: Provided an excellent assist for Boadu.
Good ratings. Wijnaldum was fabulous, he’s become a real leader in the squad and just as important as Memphis. Stengs showed positive signs, but Boadu was even more impressive – constant movement, trickery, and good passes as well.
De Jong was actually a bit lazy defensively at times, and part of the reason Estonia had a few counterattacks. Still a good performance though.
But my only real gripe with your ratings is PVA. Deserved a 5. Neither does he have the defensive awareness as Blind, nor is his crossing as good. Missed 2 good chances to score and suffered needless ball loss a few times too. Defensively PVA would get ripped apart by stronger teams. This was his first competitive cap ever – and now we know why Koeman has never picked him before.
