sneijder adNetherlands were out of sorts during the defeat in Paris, and could have been on the end of a bigger defeat, should France have been more clinical in front of goal.

Our player ratings:

Jasper Cillessen: 4/10

Had a horrible start to the game, looking very shaky with his passing. Should have done better for the Benzema opener which flew across his body.

Gregory van der Wiel: 5/10

Had a decent game. Van der Wiel looked to get forward at every opportunity, and could have scored in the first half. Was caught out of position for France’s second on a speedy counter attack.

Daley Blind: 4/10

Was out of position for the opening French goal, and was reluctant to move forward to support Jean Paul Boetius on the left wing. Was taken off at the start of the second half, and Van Gaal needs to consider whether he should be playing in midfield or at left back, with Jetro Willems, and Patrick van Aanholt options for the wing back position.

Ron Vlaar: 7/10

Best defender throughout the game, and Netherlands man of the match. Cleared Benzema’s effort off the line from a few yards out, while won most of his aerial battles. Vlaar was also Netherlands biggest threat going forward and could have scored on three separate occasions.

Bruno Martins Indi: 4/10

One of his worst performances for Netherlands so far in his international career, as he struggled to deal with Frances attacking strength. Was outpaced by Benzema for the opening goal.

Jordy Clasie: 5/10

Showed good passing quality throughout the game, but did not offer his back four much protection against an excellent France midfield.

Kevin Strootman: 5/10

Enjoyed a good start to the game, and marshalled the midfield well, but had to be taken off before half time through injury. Strootman is key to Netherlands chances in the World Cup.

Wesley Sneijder: 4/10

Tried to get involved in the early stages, but was guilty of constantly giving the ball away. Also wasted a number of corners in the first half. Was given the chance to impress Van Gaal in his favoured position, but was poor.

Quincy Promes: 5/10

Showed some good skill and pace in the opening stages, but faded as the game went on. Has a great future ahead of him, and will get his chances in qualifying for Euro 2016.

Jean Paul Boetius: 5/10

Like Promes on the other wing, Boetius was good at the start, looking to use his pace against Debuchy, but faded as the game went on. Sent in one excellent cross which nearly ended with Van Persie scoring.

Robin van Persie: 4/10

Was rather isolated throughout the game, and failed to get involved in the build up play. Was probably still suffering from the illness that nearly saw him ruled out.

Substitutes:

Stijn Schaars: 4/10

Replaced Strootman just before half time, but did not match up to the Roma midfielders dynamic play. Shielded the back four well in the second half, but did not get the team moving forward.

Karim Rekik: 6/10

Came in for his debut just after the break, and was impressive at the back, winning 100% of his aerial battles. His introduction for Blind, moving Martins Indi to left back instantly improved the back four.

Memphis Depay: 5/10

Made a brief but impressive cameo when replacing Boetius on the left wing. Looked to take on the French defenders using his pace and skill. Could be Netherlands wild card in Brazil.

Davy Klaassen: 3/10

Came on late on but failed to make much of an impact.
