During his search for a new Oranje boss, van Breukelen spoke to some of the experienced members of Netherlands squad, namely Arjen Robben, Kevin Strootman and Wesley Sneijder. They were reportedly unimpressed with the idea of appointing Dick Advocaat, who last year walked out on his role of assistant to the sacked Danny Blind in order to accept an offer from Fenerbahce.

On Advocaat walking out on Netherlands, van Breukelen said, “We are in a situation where sentiments here should be put aside for quality. If arguments are not to take someone, you do not look at grades. I can step over sentiments and feelings and see what is best for Orange. ”

On the players reaction, he added, “I called the players and they were surprised by the choice of Advocaat and Gullit. But they are professionals like me and can overstep such things.”
