Netherlands U17’s have set up a quarter-final showdown with Germany at the European Championships despite losing 3-0 to England on Wednesday.

Kees van Wonderen’s side went into the final group game on four points after a win over Ukraine and draw with Norway. Netherlands knew they were only in trouble of missing out on the quarter-finals should Norway beat Ukraine, but they fell to a 2-0 defeat which confirmed Oranje’s place in the last eight.

Against England, Netherlands started brightly but fell behind on 23-minutes when Jadon Sancho found the net with his side’s first shot on target.

In the second half, Netherlands couldn’t respond and after 48 minutes, Tijn Daverveld saw red for conceding a penalty, which Sancho scored to make it 2-0. With the man advantage, England cruised to victory and added a third late on through Hudson-Odoi.

Netherlands finish second in the group meaning they will face a daunting Quarter-final against Germany, who hammered Republic of Ireland 7-0 earlier in the day. The winner on that tie on Saturday not only makes the semi-finals but books their place at the U17 World Cup next year.
