Going into the final group game, Aron Winter’s side only needed a draw to reach the semi-finals, but that never seemed likely as France completely dominated the game from the start and humiliated the young Dutch side.
Kylian Mbappe Lottin opened the scoring for France in the opening ten minutes, and PSG’s Jean-Kevin Augustin made it 2-0 on the half hour mark. Netherlands gave themselves hope before the break when Steven Bergwijn was brought down in the box and Abdelhak Nouri netted from the penalty spot.
However, after the break France ran riot with Augustin scoring two to complete his hat-trick, while Lottin added his second to make it 5-1 at the end.
France progress to the semi-finals, while Netherlands face Germany in a third place play-off for a U20 World Cup spot on Thursday.
I guess KNVB is determined to build minds that have no clue on how or willing to defend. Mental softness is being bred in the youth. Not only has Holland lost a great generation of players it seems they have also failed to develop/choose coaches as well. I was surprised a team under Aron Winter had an opportunity to do something as he had a horrendous tenure in the MLS in North America. Winning only breeds winning. Getting slaughtered is a sign the coach is clueless has no connection with his squad or both. Van Oosteen must go. Now!
well said. plus i still wonder how the likes of van de beek and de jong could opt against playing for their country; how Bijlow, Kongolo, Dilrosun were not called up?…it’s been for ages now we can’t get past the group stage of this tournament!
Talented squad should have gone further
