Both the Netherlands U20 and U19 sides were in action on Wednesday with differing results for the two teams.

amersThe Elite Cup got underway in Germany on Wednesday with Netherlands U20’s beginning the four team competition with a heavy 3-1 defeat to England U20’s.

The young English side dominated the opening stages and Reece Brown gave them a deserved lead on eight minutes. Utrecht midfielder Bart Ramselaar had an excellent opportunity to equalise but he failed to beat the English goalkeeper when through on goal. The miss was punished by the more clinical England as Brandon Barker made it 2-0 on the half hour mark.

Netherlands improved after the break, but failed to net their chances and England made it 3-0 through Sam Gallacher on 80 minutes before PSV defender Augustine Loof pulled one back in injury time.

Next up for the U20’s is a tie with Germany on Saturday.

de jong frenkiThere was better news for the U19’s who hammered Gibraltar 9-0 in their opening Euro 2017 qualifier.

Aron Winter’s side went ahead in the seventh minute through Steven Bergwijn before his PSV teammate Sam Lammers made it two on 26 minutes and then three soon after. Lammers missed the chance to net a first half hat-trick after missing from the penalty spot, but the PSV striker did net his third on 58 minutes.

Substitute Jari Schuurman made it 5-0 before Bergwijn, Gino Decker and Abdelhak Nouri all scored in a five minute period to make it 8-0. Five minutes before the end Schuurman added his second to complete the rout.

Netherlands U19’s now face Liechtenstein on Friday before coming up against hosts France on Monday. The top two in each group qualify for the next stage of qualifying.
