Coach Remy Reijnierse rung the changes from the first day win over Costa Rica, and it was one of the players drafted in that opened the scoring for Netherlands after only seven minutes, with Heracles striker Brahim Darri curling a shot past Cody Cropper.
However USA became the stronger side as the half wore on and goals from Jerome Kiesewetter and Alonso Hernandez put the American’s ahead at the break. Any chance of a Netherlands comeback was ended three minutes into the second half when Will Packwood headed in a corner.
Despite the introduction of Ajax winger Anwar El Ghazi Netherlands could find no way back into the match, and they will now have to beat Qatar on Sunday to have any chance of reaching the final.
