Netherlands U21’s are out of the Toulon Tournament after a 4-0 thrashing by hosts France U20’s.

ned u21Jong Oranje went into the game knowing a win by two goals would put them in the final, while they would need to lose by four goals to avoid playing in the 3rd place play-0ff.

It was Netherlands who started the brighter of the two teams and Elvio Van Overbeek should have opened the scoring, but the PSV winger failed to connect with the ball in front of goal.

France barely exited their own half in the opening 18 minutes, but out of nowhere they took the lead in superb fashion. A quick free kick was played to Romain Habran, who unleashed an unstoppable 35 yard strike into the top corner. Even after the goal it was Netherlands who continued to dominate the 1st half, but Rai Vloet shot wide from a good position, while van Overbeek could only send a free header over the bar.

In the second half everything fell apart for the young Dutch side, with Clint Leemans conceding a penalty on 48 minutes which was converted by Youness Kaabouni, before Nnomo took advantage of slack defending to tap in France’s third.

Ten minutes before the end Enzo Crivelli added France’s fourth to send Netherlands home from the competition and the USA into third place play-off.
