Netherlands women had some difficulty on Friday evening in Slovenia but they eventually sealed a 4-2 win in their European Championship qualifier.

Netherlands boss Sarina Wiegman was unable to call on Lieke Martens, Stefanie van der Gragt, Shanice van de Sanden, Kika van Es and Jackie Groenen for the tie in Slovenia and from the start it was a struggle for Oranje’s Vrouwen.

In the 12th minute, Slovenia deservedly took the lead when Mateja Zver fired in after Sari van Veenendaal had parried a shot.

In the 28th minute, Vivianne Miedema equalised for Netherlands with a tap-in from close range. Two minutes into the second half, Lineth Beerensteyn headed Netherlands in front and normal service seemed to have been resumed.

However, Slovenia equalised through Kaja Korosec after the hosts exploited space in the Netherlands defence. Ten minutes later, Netherlands regained their lead in fortunate circumstances as Sherida Spitse’s curling free kick was left untouched by anyone and nestled into the net.

Spitse then sealed the victory with an excellent free-kick with seven minutes left.

Netherlands get the victory which keeps the defending European Champions top of the group and well on course to reach the tournament in 2021.
