Netherlands Women’s team have qualified for next years World Cup after a 2-1 victory over Italy on Thursday night.

miedemaThe first leg of the play-off match finished 1-1 in Netherlands on Saturday, but 18-year-old Bayern Munich striker Vivianne Miedema netted the opening goal in Italy after only nine minutes before doubling the lead just before half time.

Stephanie van der Gragt’s own goal in the second half made the last 30 minutes a little nervous for Netherlands, but Italy never really threatened a come back and the Oranje held on to book their place in Canada next year.

Qualifying for the World cup is the latest success for women’s football in Netherlands after the U19 side, also inspired by Miedema’s goals won the European U19 championships in the summer.

The tournament takes place in Canada next June/July and the Dutch women will be hoping to make the tournament just as exciting as the men did last summer, and go one better than the semi-finals.
