The Women’s European Championships began in Utrecht on Sunday evening with hosts Netherlands beating Norway 1-0.

In a packed Stadion Galgenwaard, Netherlands nearly got off to the perfect start, but Lieke Martens was denied from a few yards out by the Norwegian goalkeeper after a minute.

Both sides traded chances in a goalless first half, but Netherlands were mainly on top and found the goal they deserved with fifteen minutes left with Martens cross headed into the net by Shanice van der Sanden.

Jackie Groenen’s flawless performance in midfield then prevented Norway from gaining the upper hand in the last ten minutes and Netherlands held on for victory to get off to a perfect start.

Next up for Netherlands is a tie against Denmark in four days before they end the group stages against Belgium on the 24th.
