The Newcastle based newspaper is reporting that the Premier League club has held talks with PSV representatives over the past few days, and are hoping to complete a deal in the next few days.
The 24-year-old is expected to leave Eindhoven this summer, with Newcastle United’s rivals Sunderland, Italian sides Roma and AC Milan, and French sides Monaco and Marseille all linked with moves for the Dutch international. However it seems Newcastle are now the favourites, with former Twente boss Steve McClaren hoping to make him his first signing since taking charge of the club.
Earlier this summer Wijnaldum admitted he had spoken with Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul on life in England.
He told Sky Sports, “I speak with Leroy Fer and Tim Krul about England a lot. Tim has been in England since he was 17. He only says good things about England and living in Newcastle.
“The stadium is big with 50,000 people, the fans are great and life is great there.
“You have better players and teams in England, and for myself it is better to play in a better league against better players.”
Wijnaldum has a contract at PSV until 2018, and the club are holding out for a €15 million fee, with Russian side Zenit st Petersburg having a €10 million bid rejected earlier this summer.
