De Jong has struggled to make an impact in the Bundesliga since joining Gladbach in 2012 from FC Twente, and is expected to leave the club this month.
So far this season the Dutchman has appeared 13 times in the Bundesliga, but all 13 have been from the bench, and the forward is yet to score a goal.
Newcastle United have been long term admirers of the 23-year-old, and according to Sky Sports News, they have begun talks to bring him to St James Park.
Manager Alan Pardew has stated already this window that a striker is his priority, and it seems De Jong is high up on the list of potential targets.
The Magpies will look to bring De Jong in on an initial loan period, although they may face competition from fellow Premier League side Stoke City, who have also been credited with interest.
De Jong needs first team football if he is to convince Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal that he deserves a place in his World Cup squad, and a move to Newcastle could be perfect for both parties.
I would have hoped for Siem De Jong not Luuk de Jong. Having not scored in 13 appearances does not fill me with excitement. For a team that needs goal-scorers why are we going for an average player with such a poor record this term. Also if he can’t make it in the Bundesliga what makes us think that he can make it in the EPL? I am not sure this signing is such a good idea.
