The news will come as a blow to Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal who is looking to strengthen the physicality of his midfield.

Van Gaal had hoped the former Manchester City defensive midfielder would join fellow Dutchmen Daley Blind, Memphis Depay, and Robin van Persie at Old Trafford when his contract expires at the end of the month.

However a deal looks increasingly unlikely and van Gaal will have to shift his attention elsewhere. Morgan Schneiderlin is reportedly a target, although the £24 million asking price may be a deterrent.
